Sergeant William H. Ellis served with the 2nd Battalion in China from 23 September 1914, taking part in the siege of Tsingtao against the German forces stationed there. This successful operation resulted in the unique battle honour ‘China’ for 2/S. Wales Borderers. Ellis served subsequently with the 2nd Battalion at Gallipoli, Egypt, France and Flanders, and in Germany.
