Ernest Bond was born in Rotherham in 1897. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 13th Battalion K.R.R. at Attercliffe, Sheffield on 11 January 1915, aged 19 years, 10 months. With the battalion he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 31 July 1915. He was severely wounded in France on 28 August 1918 and invalided to England. His wounds resulted in the amputation of both legs and the loss of his left eye.
