Three: Shipwright 1st Class W. Palmer, Royal Navy and Divisional Carpenter, H.M. Coast Guard

William Palmer was born in Kensington, London on 26 December 1866. A Carpenter by occupation, he joined the Royal Navy as Carpenter’s Crew on 12 October 1889. He was promoted to Leading Carpenter’s Crew in January 1892 when on Australia; Shipwright in March 1894 when at Pembroke and Leading Shipwright in May 1895 when at Pembroke. In April 1901 he transferred to the Coast Guard at Inverness as Divisional Carpenter; moving to Stornaway in May 1905. Palmer was awarded the long service medal in October 1909 and was pensioned in December 1909. He returned to service as a Shipwright with the Royal Navy in August 1914, serving on Humber, April 1914-September 1917 and Pembroke II, September-November 1917. He was invalided from the service on 28 November 1917 suffering from varicose veins. With copied service paper.
