The Alexander Memorial Prize, consisting of £50 and a gold medal (now a gilt medal and a purse of £550) was provided from a fund raised by public subscription in the memory of Thomas Alexander, CB (1812-60), who had taken an active and important part in the recognition of the Army Medical Dept after the Crimean War.
