Charles Robb was born in Lanark and enlisted in the 2nd Dragoons in February 1839, aged 20 years. He was subsequently actively employed in the Crimea, being was present at Balaklava and Inkermann, and in operations before Sebastopol, the former action seeing him participate in the famous charge of the Heavy Brigade - regimental musters for the period show him as effective without interlude between 1 October and 31 December 1854 (Medal & 3 clasps; Turkish Medal). Robb was discharged back in Edinburgh in March 1863, having in the interim been awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal; sold with copied service papers.
