M.M. London Gazette 9 July 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘For gallantry and devotion to duty near Thelus on 9 April 1917, in assuming command of his platoon after his seniors had become casualties. His conduct throughout was a splendid example to all ranks.’

Robert Lewis was born in Calgary, Alberta, on 26 August 1886. A Cook by occupation, he attested for the 142nd (London’s Own) Battalion at Windsor, Ontario, in November 1915. Proceeding to England and thence to France, he served with the 14th Canadian Infantry and was awarded the M.M. in respect of the above cited deeds at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. That November, however, he was admitted to hospital suffering from shell gas poisoning and was invalided to England and thence Canada; sold with copied service papers.
