Fred Binns was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire. on 24 January 1897. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 74th Battalion on 27 July 1915, he went out to France with the 18th Battalion and was wounded during the battle of Regina Trench on 1 October 1916 - subsequently having some 40 pieces of shrapnel removed. Amazingly he made a sufficient recovery and rejoined his unit, only to be killed in action during the battle of Hill 70 on 17 August 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial. Binns was the son of Alfred and Caroline J. Binns, of 5 Foswell Street, West Toronto; sold with copied service papers.
