Born in the Parish of Weedon, Northamptonshire. While serving in the 5th Middlesex V.R.C., he volunteered for service in the Boer War and served in South Africa with the 1st Special Service Company, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. During the Great War he served in India with the 4th Battalion, East Kent Regiment.
