William Taylor was born in Leeds and enlisted in March 1898. He was posted to the 4th Battalion, but served with the Mounted Infantry Section of the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, joining them at Ladysmith on 28 October 1899. In May 1902 he rejoined the 4th Battalion and served with them in Somaliland.
