Joseph Gordon was born in the Parish of St Ann’s, Brown Town, Middlesex, Jamaica, and enlisted in June 1892, aged 22 years. He served in West Africa from December 1894 to October 1898, and took part in the expeditions to the Hinterland of Lagos, and to Sierra Leone. He was discharged in June 1902.
