Harry Mills was born at Hammersmith, Middlesex, on 20 July 1858. He joined the Royal Navy in July 1876, aged 18 years, for a 10 year period. He served aboard many ships during his service and at the end of his 10 year period was a qualified Diver with the rate of Leading Seaman. He signed on for a further period of 10 years, was advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class, and was discharged in June 1895.
