Auction Catalogue
Great Britain, Peace and Liberty, c.1920, a large uniface cast bronze maquette by G. Bayes, male horseman left with shield bearing an inverted dove of peace, holding a torch in right hand and wreath in left, broken sword below, 20.4cm. (Irvine/Atterbury –). About very fine and extremely rare; holed at top for suspension (£100-150)
An unusual piece almost certainly made in the immediate aftermath of World War I, perhaps as part of a war memorial, but curiously not included in the latest catalogue raisonné of Bayes’ work.
