At the outbreak of war the 3rd Dragoon Guards were stationed at Cairo, Egypt. They entered France on 31 October 1914 as part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division.

After service with the 3rd Dragoon Guards in the Boer War, William G. Mackney re-enlisted/was recalled to the regiment on 5 August 1914 and served with them in France. In October 1916 he was transferred to the Military Mounted Police. He was discharged unfit on 30 July 1918, being awarded the Silver War Badge.
