Joseph Charles Bishop, who was born in Cornwall in September 1889, entered the Royal Navy as a Writer 3rd Class in April 1916, with an appointment aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Iphigenia. Having then served in a similar capacity in Vindictive from October 1916 until November 1917, he returned briefly to the Iphigenia before removing to the battleship Glory in January 1918, the flagship of the British North Russia Squadron based at Archangel. His service records further notes time in the employ of the Naval Transport Officer at Archangel from April 1918 until March 1919, when he returned home, via Hamburg. He was demobilised in June of the same year; sold with copied service record.
