Anthony Humphrey Hamilton Whitehead was born in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, Ireland in 1819. He attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 25 September 1835, aged 16 years, 6 months. Promoted to Bombardier in April 1845, Corporal in March 1846, Serjeant in September 1847, he was appointed Master Gunner in July 1856.
Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal with a gratuity of £15 in July 1860. Served with the Coast Brigade R.A., September 1835-August 1861. In 1861 he was appointed via a Queen’s Commission to be Adjutant of the 21st Lancashire Artillery Volunteer Corps (London Gazette 27 September 1861). In 1864 he was appointed Adjutant of the 4th Administrative Brigade of Lancashire Artillery Volunteers (London Gazette 25 March 1864). Granted the temporary rank of Captain whilst serving as Adjutant of the 4th Administrative Brigade Lancashire Artillery Volunteers (London Gazette 24 February 1874). As Captain and Adjutant of the 5th Lancashire Corps Volunteer Artillery, he was placed on a retired allowance and granted the honorary rank of Major (London Gazette 23 September 1881).
