Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, Fire Medal, bronze (Leslie Clifford Foreman for Gallant Service 3-4-70) with bronze brooch bar, in case of issue, extremely fine £200-250
With a letter from Mr R. H. N. Hardy, Divisional Manager, British Railways London Midland Region, dated 16 April 1971.
‘Dear Mr Foreman, It has been brought to my attention that on Friday, 3rd May (sic), 1970 following an outbreak of fire at Flat No. 85 Cameron Road, Leasowe (Wirral), jointly with Mr Thomlinson, you assisted in rescuing children trapped in the fire. Despite the most punishing condition of heat and smoke and without regard for your personal safety you successfully managed to enter the Flat and assisted in the rescue of one of the children. The fact that two of the three children were subsequently rescued and successfully resuscitated was attributed largely to your efforts. I am aware that on the 14th January 1971 you were presented with a Certificate and Bronze Medal from the Royal Humane Society by the Mayor of Wallasey, I also commend you on your gallant action and as a gesture of my appreciation I have decided to award you the sum of 30 guineas. ....’
Note: as the award of a bronze Royal Humane Society Medal to Foreman is not recorded; it is likely that medal referred to in the letter was the above Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Fire Medal.
