Instituted in 1987. The medal may be awarded to any person who has performed an act of courage and gallantry in circumstances of personal danger. It has only been once awarded to Headquarters Singapore Commando for the successful operation onboard Singapore Airlines SQ117 hijack rescue operation on 26 March 1991.
