A group of nine miniature dress medals attributed to Brigadier-General C. S. Rome, 11th Hussars

The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, silver-gilt and enamel, some enamel damage; Distinguished Service Order, 18ct. gold and enamel, complete with top bar; India General Service 1895-1902, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-8; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State, Transvaal; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps; 1914-15 Star; British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf; Serbia, Order of the White Eagle, 4th Class with swords, silver-gilt and enamel, rosette on ribbon, mounted as worn, nearly very fine and better (9) £200-260

Claude Stuart Rome was born in Queensland in 1875, the eldest son of Thomas Rome, of Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire. He was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. Commissioned into the 11th Hussars in 1895, he served in the Tirah campaign and the Boer War. In the latter war he served on the Staff and as Adjutant of the 1st Johannesburg Mounted Rifles. Served in Rhodesia, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal, seeing action at the Elands River. Employed with the Egyptian Army, 1903-07. In the Great War he served in Gallipoli, April-May 1915 and August-December 1915; in Egypt, May-August 1915; January-March 1916 and with the E.E.F., March 1916-September 1917. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 6 July 1917; 12 January 1918; 14 June 1918; 22 January 1922); received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel and was awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazette 1 January 1918), the C.M.G. (London Gazette 1 January 1919) and the Serbian Order of the White Eagle (London Gazette 15 February 1917). For the last two years of the war he commanded a brigade as Temporary Brigadier-General. In 1920 he transferred from the 11th Hussars to the Queen’s Bays and retired in 1925. Brigadier-General Rome died on 17 May 1956.
