Provenance: Sotheby, July 1998.
The entry in WO 100/4 where, already having been granted ‘Nive’ he claims ‘Vittoria’ and ‘Pyrenees’, has the comment ‘This man was present at Vittoria but not at the Pyrenees, he is also entitled to Nivelle and St Sebastian’. ‘Nivelle’ was added to his claim but, for some reason, ‘St Sebastian’ was not. He served in Major Bull’s ‘I’ Troop in the Peninsula and at Waterloo where ‘his troop effected the greatest possible service throughout the early part of the battle; but owing to the loss sustained both in men and horses, together with the disabled condition of the guns (through incessant firing) it was obliged to retire before the close.’
