Provenance: Bought Spink 1957.
John Terry was born in 1810, a native of Liverpool. A Stationer by trade, he enlisted at Liverpool on 27 October 1830 for unlimited service, aged 20. He embarked for India on 21 January 1831, in the Marquess of Huntley, arriving on 20 May 1831. Posted to the Bombay Artillery, he was transferred to 4th Troop, Bombay Horse Artillery, rising through the ranks of Corporal and Riding Master Sergeant to that of Quartermaster Sergeant. No. 4 Troop served in Afghanistan in 1839 (for services see previous lot). Waters re-enlisted for a further 5 years on 27 October 1847, and was pensioned and sent to Europe in February 1852. He was subsequently sent on service with the Ambulance Corps in Turkey and died at Varna, Bulgaria, on 7 July 1854.
The Troop was commanded in Afghanistan by Captain T. E. Cotgrave.
