Edward Bidmead was born in the parish of Didcot, Abingdon, Berkshire. A Farm Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Army at Abingdon on 1 December 1881, aged 19 years, 2 months. With the Royal Berkshire Regiment he served in Gibraltar, April 1883-August 1884; Egypt, August 1884-May 1886; Cyprus, June 1886-February 1888, and Malta, February 1888-November 1889. Serving in Egypt, his unit was present at the battle of Ginnis, 30 December 1885 and he was awarded the Queen’s medal with two clasps and the Khedive’s Star.
Bidmead was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1889 and discharged on 30 November 1893.
