Robert Marr was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. A Boiler Maker by occupation and a member of the Lancashire Artillery, he attested for regular service with the Lancers of the Line at Seaforth on 5 October 1893, aged 19 years. Posted to the 17th Lancers he served in South Africa, February 1900-February 1901 and June 1901-August 1902. He transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1902 and was discharged on 4 October 1905. He enlisted for Section “D” Army Reserve in February 1906.
Serving with the 17th Lancers at the time of the Great War, he entered France on 6 October 1914. He was discharged on 14 December 1917.
