Pair: Lieutenant C. G. E. Clowes, 3rd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, who died of wounds on 18 Febrruary 1915

Charles George Edric Clowes was born in 1892, the youngest son of Major C. E. Clowes, K.R.R.C. and Mrs Clowes of Milnthorpe, Winchester. He was educated at Eton School, 1906-09 and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the K.R.R.C. in 1912 and on mobilisation, went to France/Flanders with the 1st Battalion. He was wounded in the trenches in October 1914 and invalided home. On recovery, he rejoined his own battalion, the 3rd and was mortally wounded in the fierce fighting around St. Eloi on 15 February 1915 - being hit in the head whilst repairing a parapet, dying three days later. Lieutenant Clowes was buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery.
