Edwin Charles Holmes was born in Stanton, Gloucestershire and enlisted at Cheltenham. Serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment he entered into the France/Flanders theatre of war on 4 October 1915. He was killed in action when serving with the 8th Battalion during the battle of the Somme on 3 July 1916, aged 22 years. Having no known grave, his name was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Mr Mark Holmes, of Stanton, Broadway, Gloucester.
With Memorial Scroll named to ‘Pte. Edwin Charles Holmes, Gloucestershire Regiment’ and two photographs of the recipient. These, together with the group and the unrelated British War Medal contained in an ornate gilt (slightly damaged) glazed case, 642 x 530mm.
