Lewis Thomas Roberts was born in Flixton, Suffolk, on 4 June 1871. A School Teacher by profession, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Probationary Sick Berth Assistant at Haslar Hospital on 29 June 1895, being confirmed in that rank in October 1895. Promoted to Sick Berth Steward 2nd Class in February 1900, he took his discharge by purchase on 4 October 1901. He resumed his service at the same rank in October 1904 and was advanced to Sick Berth Steward 1st Class in June 1907. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in July 1913. Roberts served throughout the war at Chatham Hospital, being promoted to Chief Sick Berth Steward in April 1916. Promoted to Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer in August 1920, he discharged to a civil appointment in November 1920.
