The exceptional O.B.I. pair awarded to Subadar Oomraj/Umraz, 27th Regiment Native Infantry

Order of British India, 2nd Class neck badge, gold and enamel; India General Service 1854-95, 6 clasps, Hazara 1891, Samana 1891, Burma 1887-89, Burma 1885-7, Jowaki 1877-8, Looshai (Sepoy Oomraj, 27th Regt. N.I.) clasps mounted in that order, claw refitted; together with a loose clasp, ‘Ali Musjid’, medal with contact marks and some edge bruising, nearly very fine; decoration nearly extremely fine (3) £1200-1500

Oomraj/Oomraz entered the Bengal Native Infantry on 10 April 1865. He was promoted Jemadar in May 1878 and Subadar in June 1888. He retired from the regiment with this rank in 1900. Initially his name was spelt ‘Oomraj’ or ‘Oomraz’ but on army lists after 1882 it was spelt ‘Umraz’. Awarded the Order of British India, 2nd Class with the title ‘Bahadur’, in January 1895. His entry in the January 1900 Indian Army List gives a listing of the campaigns at which he was present and the medals and clasps awarded: ‘S.E. Frontier of India, Lushai, 1871-72 - medal and clasp; N.W. Frontier, Jowaki, 1877-78 - clasp; Afghanistan 1878-79-80 - medal with clasp; Burma 1886-87-88 - 2 clasps; N.W. Frontier of India, Hazara 1891 - clasp; N.W. Frontier of India, Mirazai, 1891 - clasp.’
