Sold with copies of medal rolls and detailed obituary, including photograph from The Green Howards Gazette, from which the following is extracted: ‘Major William Auschar Chauncy was commissioned to the 1st Battalion from the Militia on the 30th October 1878, which he joined in Bermuda. In 1885 he took part in the Nile Expedition and with the Soudan Frontier Force in 1885-86, being present at the action of Ginniss. In 1891 he took over the Adjutancy of our old 1st Volunteer Battalion at Northallerton, and retired as a Major in November 1896. During the Great War he was employed as Chief Recruiting Officer, 35th Regimental District, from September 1914 to October 1917, and then under the Ministry of National Service to April 1918 (mentioned in home despatch).’
