Albert Cullingham was born near Sevenoaks, Kent. A Brickmaker by occupation and a member of the 3rd Royal West Kent Regiment (Militia), he attested for the 20th Hussars at Maidstone on 9 December 1886, aged 18 years, 2 months. With the regiment he served in Egypt, September 1888-November 1890. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1893, he was recalled to active service in February 1901. Posted to the 10th Hussars, he served in South Africa, April 1901-July 1902. Cullingham was discharged on 8 December 1902. With copied service papers.
