Joseph Cook was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Grenadier Guards at Nottingham on 27 January 1890, aged 19 years, 6 months. After service in the U.K., he was transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1897. Recalled in December 1899, he served with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in South Africa, 18 March-4 May 1900. Transferred to the 1st Battalion, he was discharged as medically unfit on 30 December 1900.
