Samuel Swindell was born in Church Greasley, Derbyshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 5th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, he attested for the Royal Scots at Derby on 28 March 1890, aged 18 years, 4 months. He served overseas in Malta, December 1890-March 1892 and India, March 1892-December 1897. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1897. Recalled in October 1899, he served in South Africa from 6 November 1899 until 22-January 1901 when he was invalided. He was discharged on 1 July 1902. With copied service papers and roll extract.
