George King was born in Mohill, Co. Leitrim. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles (Militia), he attested for regular service at Hamilton on 15 June 1898. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, 1 January 1900-April 1902, the unit seeing action at Spion Kop, 24 January 1900 and Tugela Heights, February 1900. In April 1902 he was posted to the 1st Battalion in India where he served until March 1906. Transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1906, he was discharged in June 1910. On the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted into his regiment and as an Acting Serjeant saw action on the Western Front. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and other research.
