William Cook was born in Manchester. A Cooper by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Manchester Regiment, he attested for regular service in the South Lancashire Regiment at Warrington on 6 March 1890, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the regiment he served in Gibraltar, March-September 1892; Malta, September 1892-February 1893; Egypt, February 1893-February 1895, and India, February 195-November 1897. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1897, he was recalled to the Colours in November 1899 and served in South Africa, November 1899-June 1900. Being invalided to England, he was discharged on 30 April 1902. With copied service papers and roll extract.
