George Bateman was born in Hull. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the King’s Royal Rifles at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 27 October 1896, aged 19 years, 11 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in South Africa, November 1897-July 1902. In March 1899 he was convicted by court martial of striking his superior officer and was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour (2 months remitted). Passes instruction in Mounted Infantry in May 1899. Discharged as medically unfit on 16 September 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts - also awarded the King’s medal with two clasps.
