Daniel Henry Flanagan was born in Poona, India. He attested for the Royal Irish Rifles at Cahir on 18 January 1892, aged 18 years. With the 2nd Battalion he served in Malta, October 1892-November 1894; and the East Indies, November 1894-February 1899. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1899, he was recalled to the Colours in October and served n South Africa, December 1899-October 1902. He was made a prisoner-of-war at Stormberg, 10 December 1899. Was twice recorded as awaiting trial by district court martial, once in August 1900 for disobeying a lawful command; and again in July 1902 for conduct to the prejudice of the service. He was discharged in January 1904. With copied service papers.
