D.C.M. London Gazette 11 February 1918. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a hostile counter-attack he rallied the men, and, on the flanks giving way, he held the centre, and was instrumental in stopping the counter-attack by organising fire, which caused heavy casualties to the enemy. His conduct, when in sole charge of the company, throughout the operation, set a splendid example to the men.’
Arthur Albert Adie was born in Leamingon, Warwickshire and is believed to have enlisted into the Royal Lancaster Regiment in about 1906. As a Corporal in the Royal Lancaster Regiment, entered France on 24 March 1915. As the Company Sergeant-Major of the 11th (Service) Battalion, he was awarded the D.C.M. for gallantry and leadership in the action at Bourlon Ridge, 26 November 1917. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant (London Gazette 11 February 1918), Adie joined the 1/5th (T.F.) Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment in January 1918. He was killed in action on 3 May 1918 - the war diary reports heavy shelling on that day. He was buried in the Houchin British Cemetery, France. Commemorated in the Roll of Honour in the Regimental Chapel in Lancaster Priory Church. With copied research.
