Royal Humane Society, large silver medal (successful) (Robert Mason, Jnr., Vit. ob Serv. D.D. Soc. Reg. Hvm. 13 July 1855) fitted with a ring and engraved straight bar suspension, minor edge bruising, good very fine £300-350
‘On the 13th of July 1855, Alfred Brasier was, with another youth, bathing near a place called Tumbling Bay, near Guildford, and was carried by the stream into a hole nine feet deep; the other lad in trying to rescue him fell in also, but after struggling some time he managed to get out and called for help. Mr Robert Mason, Jun., who was at work near the spot, heard the cries for help; he was obliged to first cross the river before he could get to the hole, he therefore plunged in with his clothes on, and having gained the other side, he ran some distance and again plunged in and dived to the bottom of the hole, and so succeeded in rescuing him. This makes the fifth person that Mr Mason has saved under similar circumstances.’ (Ref. Acts of Gallantry, by Lambton Young).
