British Fire Services Association Meritorious Service Medal, reverse inscribed, ‘George Henry Lewis, 18th July 1952’, silver, hallmarks for Birmingham 1950, with ribbon, mounted as worn, in case of issue, extremely fine

George Henry Lewis began his career as a Fireman with the Ministry of Munitions at Coventry, being eventually promoted to Second Officer. In 1919 he left to take up a position as a Shift Fire Officer with Brunner, Mond & Co. In 1935 he was appointed Superintendent of the Alkali Division of Brigades. Lewis was a prominent member of the National Fire Brigade association and the Professional Fire Brigade Association for over 40 years and he helped with the amalgamation of the two associations to form the British Fire Service Association in 1949. He held the post of Chairman of the N.W. District of the B.F.S.A. for four years. In 1952 he was honoured with the award of the B.F.S.A. Meritorious Service Medal - the fourth man to receive the medal.
