Ensign Thomas Orton Howorth, 3rd West Yorkshire Militia, commissioned an Ensign without purchase in the 44th Regiment on 29 December 1854. Promoted to Lieutenant without purchase in March 1855 and Captain by purchase in July 1862. Served at the siege of Sebastopol, 16 June-1 July, including the attack on 18 June 1855 when he was severely wounded. Served in the campaign of 1860 in North China with the Chinese Cooly Corps. Served at the affairs of 14, 18 and 21 September 1860 and at the capitulation of Pekin.
