James Linton was born in Drumgath, Rathfriland, Co. Down. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 86th Regiment at Rathfriland on 22 January 1845, aged 21 years. Served over 13 years in the East Indies and was once imprisoned. Discharged at his own request having completed 21 years service at Newry on 16 April 1866; his intended place of residence being Gosport. With copied discharge papers.
