William Wilkinson was wounded in the famous action on Spion Kop on 24 January 1900.
He had enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury in March 1892, but was transferred from the 1st Battalion in Malta to the Army Reserve in September 1899, after being present during the troubles in Crete in the previous year. Quickly recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa, he was invalided home after Spion Kop in April 1900 and placed back on the Army Reserve; sold with copied service papers.
