The recipient, serving in 3 Platoon of ‘C’ Rifle Company 1st Battalion Staffordshire Regiment, was severely wounded on the night of 25/26 February 1991. The Stafford Knot records:
‘Also wounded that night was Pte. Alfie Roberts who hobbled around for another 2 days before being evacuated with a large grenade splinter in his thigh.’
A newspaper report records:
‘.... “Gary was a hero. He fought for 36 hours on a battlefield with a piece of shrapnel in his leg because he had medical training and wanted to help his mates. He also got a call through to the Sheraton Hilton in Baghdad to book a suite for a celebration after the war because he was so confident the Allies would win. It was a real morale-booster for the troops.” ...’
Another report states that he was recommended for the Military Medal for his services when wounded. Soon after the war Roberts was discharged from the Army due to drug offences.
With copied research which includes a copied photograph of the recipient with the B.B.C’s. reporter Kate Adie.
