Private A. Sayer, 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment, from Shoreditch, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. He later transferred to the 10th Battalion. This battalion was raised in September 1914, landed in France in July 1915 and went to Italy in November 1917. Whilst serving with the 10th Battalion in Italy, Sayer earned the M.M.
