A fine Second World War North Africa operations M.M. group of six awarded to Corporal A. Williamson, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, who was originally recommended for the D.C.M. for his gallantry in a desert patrol at “Hunts Gap” in March 1943 - several of the enemy falling to his gun in a close range firefight

M.M. London Gazette 22 April 1943. The original recommendation states:

‘On 11 March 1943 at Hunts Gap, this N.C.O. accompanied Captain Cadell on patrol. About 07.15 hours he spotted a German patrol of six men coming up the gully towards him. He signalled to Captain Cadell who was searching some huts nearby and together they laid themselves in ambush. When the enemy were at 200 yards distance Corporal Williamson opened fire with the Bren gun and killed two of the patrol. The others ran into cover in a fold in the ground and opened fire with a 42 Machine Gun and automatics. The M.G. fire was striking the rock beside Corporal Williamson’s head and with Captain Cadell and he changed position to the left and stalked the enemy. They then succeeded in killing the machine gunner and wounding the Sergeant leading the patrol and captured the remaining two men. Weapons, maps and personal papers were captured and the three prisoners were brought into Battalion H.Q. Corporal Williamson’s coolness and courage in this admirable little action are highly commended.’
