Frederick William Barker was born in Marylebone, London. A Tram Conductor by occupation, he attested for the A.I.F. at Liverpool, N.S.W. on 29 June 1915, aged 23 years, 2 months. Barker embarked at Sydney on the Argyllshire on 30 September 1915 and entered the war serving with the 2nd Battalion Australian Infantry. He later served with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade as a Bombardier. He was wounded (gassed) in action in France in October 1917. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 6 October 1919. With a number of copied service papers and letters.
