Robert Cossey was born at Norwich, Norfolk, in 1799, and entered the Navy as a volunteer aboard the Britannia. He joined the Powerful in December 1838 and served as a Ship’s Corporal during the campaign on the coast of Syria. He was paid off and discharged at the conclusion of Powerful’s commission on 6 January 1842.
