Ethelred Elder Hutchins is thought to have been born in India in 1859. He enlisted into the R.F.A. in 1877 and transferred to the Commissariat and Transport Corps. He saw service in Afghanistan (medal) and Burma (medal with clasp). Promoted to Conductor in 1887. Served in the Punjab and Tirah campaign (medal with two clasps). In 1900 promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissary and advanced to Assistant Commissary in 1901 and Deputy Commissary (Honoury Captain) in 1902. Retiring in 1909, he re-engaged for the Great War serving as Commissary (Honorary Captain). With copied service papers.
