M.C. Edinburgh Gazette 31 July 1916 ‘Temp. 2nd Lt. James Eckersley Kinna, 11th (S.) Bn., Lan. Fus.’ ‘When in command of an assaulting party 2nd Lt. Kinna showed conspicuous courage and initiation in leading his men and repelling counter-attacks. By his cheerfulness and confidence he inspired his men in critical situations.’

Private James Eckersley Kinna, 9th Battalion Royal Scots, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 24 February 1915. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers he earned the Military Cross for bravery and leadership in action. As a Temporary Lieutenant with the 16th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he died on 12 September 1917, aged 27 years. He was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery.
