A Second World War Burma operations M.M. awarded to Sepoy Mohd. Khan, 14th Battalion, 13th Frontier Force Rifles

M.M. London Gazette 24 August 1945. The original recommendation for an immediate award states:

‘At Myitpauk, during the afternoon of 22 January 1945, Sepoy Mohd. Khan, 14-13 Frontier Force Rifles, was performing the duties of 2-inch mortar man in 10 Platoon of ‘D’ Company. The Company was engaged in attacking the village of Myitpauk. The village was occupied but a strong counter-attack developed in very thick cover in the west end of the village. 10 Platoon bore the brunt of this attack which proved to be by at least 50 Japanese. Under the directions of his Platoon Commander, Mohd. Khan used his mortar with great skill and temporarily halted the attack. At this time a Bren gunner was wounded and Sepoy Mohd. Khan, having expended all his mortar bombs, took over the Bren.

During the subsequent difficult withdrawal of 10 Platoon through thick bushes in hand to hand fighting, Sepoy Mohd. Khan used his Bren gun with the greatest skill, twice stopping dangerous rushes by accurate firing from the hip. When the platoon position was stabilized in more open country, Sepoy Mohd. Khan, on his own initiative, chose a most skilful position from which he effectively stopped an enemy attempt to outflank the platoon position.

His complete disregard of danger and very high standard of skill-at-arms were a splendid example to his section which was largely composed of young soldiers in action for the first time.’

Mohd, Khan was from the village of Jhand, Chakwal, in Jhelum district.
