Arthur Abbie was born in Kinghorn, Fife. A Blacksmith by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Highlanders, he attested for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Kirkcaldy on 29 May 1884, aged 19 years. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1892 and re-engaged in May 1896. Recalled to the Colours, he served in South Africa, March-August 1900. Discharged on 26 May 1901 having completed his period of service. With copied service papers.

Thomas Hamill was born in Dalkeith, near Edinburgh. A Tailor by occupation and a member of the Midlothian Artillery Volunteers, he attested for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh on 27 March 1894. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, December 1895-April 1902 and in South Africa with the 1st Battalion, April-September 1902. Transferred to Army Reserve in November 1902, he re-engaged in October 1905 and was discharged on 26 March 1910.
