William Uncle was born in Much Adam (Hadham), near Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 38th Regiment at Hertford on 19 October 1864, aged 22 years. With them he served in India, July 1865-January 1872 and Malta, August 1880-August 1882, being promoted to Corporal in January 1869, Sergeant in October 1876 and Sergeant Instructor in Musketry in December 1880. Transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment, December 1883. Discharged on 29 September 1885. The above was his only medal. With copied service papers.

Silver War Badge ‘56300’ awarded to Private Joseph Whitehurst, North Staffordshire Regiment, discharged due to sickness on 21 October 1916. Silver War Badge ‘7842’ awarded to Private John Frow, Lincolnshire Regiment, discharged due to wounds on 1 July 1916.
